We are running for Freshman Caucus because we seek to create a community with vast and wide opportunities for all. Vote Dean Hevenstone for president and Henry Woodcock for vice.
HEVENSTONE WOODCOCK POLICIES
1: Work-life balance. An SU committee to study which teachers are surpassing 30 minutes of homework each night. This committee would distribute Google form surveys at different times of semesters (one right before a marking period, one right after, and one in the middle, or something along those lines.) They would analyze the data and share the results. Hopefully this would start to change the behavior.
2: Making it easier for students and families to stay on top of the information they need. I know Mr. Blumm has a weekly opportunities newsletter, and Ms. Ingram has her weekly updates. They're incredibly valuable, but they're very long and can be hard to stay on top of and digest. I would form a committee to find ways to structure and distribute information more effectively. One idea the committee might suggest is to create a checklist of subjects one wants to be notified about. For example "notify me about new clubs" or "upcoming events." The student would receive notifications when an opportunity in one of those subjects comes up.
3: Food choice. I have multiple friends with dietary restrictions, such as vegan, or gluten free, who are unable to eat school lunch from the cafeteria, and are forced to go out to lunch and spend money. I would attempt to appeal to the PA or other school organizations to raise money for diverse and restriction inclusive lunch options.
4: An alternative working space. The library is often difficult to get into, and very secluded and quiet, and hallways aren't great to work in (and there's always the risk of being stepped on), so I would create a working space that would use a classroom that has normally has a teacher that is on break for that period. The room would alternate by period, but would be the same every day. The room schedule would be sent in an email or released to the student body. A teacher (or upperclass student with a free period) could volunteer to work the room in certain periods to give advice or homework help.
5: The improvement of social life at Stuy, including more and better school events. I notice that many people going into a new school struggle to find opportunities to make and spend time with friends, and we believe that students should have fun while in high school, and should have many social opportunities to come together. This could include something like class trivia competitions, sports tournaments, and karaoke nights.
